A.R.Rahman at CBSO (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra)
 A.R.Rahman's new look after
pilgrimage.
|
On 5-6 March the world-famous music composer, A.R.Rahman, conducted the CBSO
(City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra) of Bollywood
blockbusters including his own themes from Bombay, Roja, Taal, Dil Se,
Warriors of Heaven and Earth and the Oscar-nominated Lagaan. The
concert was titled "Hooray for Bollywood".
The CBSO (City of
Birmingham Symphony Orchestra) is widely
considered one of Europe's finest orchestras.
|
The orchestra started with the remarks "Tonight we have a very special guest
who has been topping charts for over a decade and the World wide
sales of his work exceeding more than 40 million more than the sales of
Madonna and Britney Spears put together. Ladies and
gentlemen please welcome the hugely popular and very talented, A.R.RAHMAN."
Rahman's appearance at Symphony Hall is believed to have pulled in what is
believed to be the largest ever non-white audience for a mainstream British
orchestra. Delighted orchestra executives say the demand for seats was so
high, they could have sold three times as many seats as they did. Read more

A.R.Rahman Among The 10 Most Powerful People
In The Hindi Film Industry
Filmfare magazine's poll of the top ten powerful people in the Hindi film
industry. Hindi Film industry's first-ever power list, commissioned by leading
film magazine Filmfare and AC Nielsen ORG-Marg, includes film-makers, a music
director (A R Rahman) and a financier besides six top stars, whose names spell
success at the box-office.

In the overall Top Ten category A.R.Rahman comes in at number 6.
6. A R Rahman
He picks his projects, they don’t pick him. He commands top fees, but once his
name’s on a project, the soundtrack fetches top money too. His standing at the
Hindi box office does not need the added cachet of his international success.
But the industry takes pride in his having struck gold on the London stage
with apna naach gaana.
In the Music Maker category A.R.Rahman is ranked number 1.
1. A R Rahman
He works on his terms, at his pace and on his whims. He is notoriously
difficult to meet and convince—names don’t matter and neither does the money.
Once he signs on, there’s no saying when the music will arrive. But when it
does, all is forgotten and forgiven. Rahman has become even less accessible to
the Hindi film industry after his success abroad, but he is still the name
everyone wants on their projects. Next year, look out for his Bajirao Mastani
and Kisna. Also, of course, The Lord Of The Rings musical.

Rahman Takes Indian Film Music To Birmingham
Another step for A.R. Rahman, and a high note for Indian music. The
maestro’s film tunes will soon be played by the City of Birmingham Symphony
Orchestra — perhaps the first time that popular Indian music will be showcased
alongside legendary Western classical compositions before a foreign audience.
The Birmingham Orchestra is a hallowed fine arts institution which was formed
in 1920 after Neville Chamberlain and some public-spirited Englishmen decided
that the city needed an orchestra. It gave its 100th performance last year.
Rahman, who reveals that he was encouraged by his Birmingham-based film
associate Taz Bashir to be a part of CBSO, will compose for two concerts in
March and November next year.
‘‘Instrumental versions of pieces that have been chosen from films that I have
composed for the past 12 years will be used in March,’’ says the music
director. For the second concert, Rahman will create music based on Sufi poet
Farid ud-din Attar’s most famous piece of literature, The Conference of the
Bird.
Notwithstanding the distinction, the man who will present some of Indian
cinema’s most hummable tunes to an uninitiated gathering, has a complaint. ‘‘I
don’t know what’s next,’’ says Rahman. ‘‘Already there’s no sleep.’’
Can’t blame him, going by the list of projects he’s involved in: A London West
End production for J.R.R. Tolkein’s Lord of the Rings, Bollywood Dreams for
Broadway, five film productions including Mani Ratnam’s Yuva starring Ajay
Devgan, Shyam Benegal’s Subhash Chandra Bose, Mangal Pandey — The Rising.
‘‘Time has permitted me to compose only the theme song, which will be in
english for Subhash Ghai’s Kisna,’’ he adds.
On other versions of the national anthem in his New Year list, Rahman says:
‘‘No, but I’m doing the music for the IMAX-Bharat Bala film Taj Mahal. It’s
mostly acoustic-based classical music that will have a Persian and Arabic
flavour.’’
