About Me

Brief Introduction

My name is Jahanzeb Farooq (though mostly people know me by my nick Tippu). I honored this world with my presence on 12 August 1979 (yet another great Leo). Now don't forget to wish me on my birthday. This page intends to provide a brief introduction of mine. Hope you won't mind.

Hope you liked my photo, see more photos in Photo Gallery.

Short Biography

I was born on 12 August 1979 in Faisalabad, Pakistan, moved to Libya with my parents when I was only one year old, came back to Pakistan with my family in 1991, completed matriculation studies (10th) from Laboratory High School (University of Agriculture Faisalabad), F.Sc. from Govt. College Faisalabad, Bachelor of Computer Science from Hamdard University in 2004, worked at COMSDEV for short time as software developer, went to Sweden in August 2004 for master studies, completed M.Sc in Computing Science from Umea University in February 2006, worked as research assistant at the same university for short time, came to France to join INRIA as R&D engineer in October 2006. And finally got married in February 2008 (nikah took place in January 2007). My wife is also associated with computer science. Her home page can be reached here.

Childhood

I spent 12 years of childhood in Libya. We came back to Pakistan in 1991 and settled. I love Libya, and always miss those memorable (and tension-less) childhood days, when all I knew was to play and have fun.

Personality

I am a simple and sincere person (you have to digest it!, do you expect I will say bad things about me on my own web page!). I am quite passionate as well, normally either I like a thing strongly or dislike strongly. Sometimes I also have this bad habit of being "perfectionist", for example sometimes when it takes long to become satisfied by the outcome of something I am working on. Besides this sometimes I am really irritated by my workaholic habits, I say myself get a break man but the story ends there and I never succeed to do so.

Qualification and Ambitions

I did Bachelor of Computer Science from Hamdard University, Pakistan, and M.Sc in Computing Science from Umea University, Sweden. Currently I am working at INRIA (The French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control) as R&D Software Engineer. I am working on implementation of IEEE 802.16 WiMAX (a wireless network technology) for NS-3 (a next generation network simulator). In coming years I want to see myself becoming an expert in my field software engineering. I am very ambitious for working at a highly competitive and dynamic position at a top telecom company where I am part of the highly skilled and competitive team and have the best opportunities to learn, to excel, creativity and to practice the most advanced tools and techniques of software engineering.

Interests and Hobbies

This sections can be described in few words:

1. Music - Just can't live without it. I am huge A. R. Rahman fan, a true Rahmaniac in fact (join ARRahmanFans, the biggest online community of his fans here). I am a seasoned fan of the king of pop Michael Jackson as well.
2. Books - I like reading books, mostly professional/technical books. I recently compiled a list of some of the great/classic books in computer science (see at Amazon also.) as well as a list of recommended books for CS people. I have written some reviews at Amazon.com as well. My reviews can be read here. I also like to read non-technical books in my leisure time. For those interested here is a list of some of the best books on religion and another on Pakistan.
3. Video Games - but very sadly I don't have enough time for it. (Especially Resident Evil, I just loooooove this game. And other horror/adventure games e.g., Silent Hill etc)
4. Movies - Mostly I like horror/thriller and drama movies.

My Name

Tippu is my nick name. My grandfather called me by this name, inspired by Tippu Sultan (1750-1799), the great Muslim ruler and freedom fighter, known as Tiger of Mysore because of his bravery. The nick became so common that people often don't know that it is not my real name. My real name is Jahanzeb and full name is Jahanzeb Farooq. Here Farooq is not my father's name but my father attached it with my name because Hazrat Umar Farooq (584-644), the second of the four Khulafa ar-Rashidin (Rightfully-guided Caliphs), is his ideal personality. "Farooq" means the one who can distinguish between truth and falsehood. My father's name is Muhammad Abdul Ghafoor.

Because of these two names some time confusions arise. In order to get rid off this dual personality I use Jahanzeb Tippu as my full name.
